About
While cartooning has always been something I wanted to try out, I never attempted to pursue it because I wanted to focus on drawing dragons. However, in sophomore year, I decided to try and branch out to other art styles and try new things. This took the form of cartoons, anime, pop surrealism, and more.
Because my art style can be seen as cartoon-like, the challenge of redefining my artistic boundaries was both easy and full of obstacles. Many times, I would have the ability to create characters but I was unsure of what to do with them. I had never tried to make a political cartoon before, and although I had many ideas, I was afraid of failure.
My first 'official' cartoon was my feature photo for my feature, "Teenagers need understanding, not fixing." Instead of taking a photo for my feature, which is what many other people did, I chose to draw my own from scratch. Out of all the articles published in the first half of 2019, mine was the only one with a self-drawn photo.
While the article itself did not win any awards (ironically), to my surprise, I won third place in the 2019 California Press Women's High School Communications Contest for my cartoon.
